We also saw VAR in action for the first time ever in the league with a Gabriel Jesus goal disallowed because Sterling’s shoulder was offsides on the initial pass and a Declan Rice encroachment allowed Aguero to retake a penalty he missed.
Mauricio Pochettino Spurs side also survived an early scare after Aston Villa stunned them with an early goal. New signing Tanguy Ndombele levelled up for Spurs in the 73rd minute. Harry Kane scored a brace late in in the game to give Tottenham a 3-1 win.
Frank Lampard suffered defeat in his first competitive game as a manager as Chelsea were thumped 4-0 by Manchester United at Old Trafford. Marcus Rashford (2), Anthony Martial and Daniel James got on the scoresheet for the Red Devils.
